Eric Cantona backs Pep Guardiola

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona believes that Pep Guardiola would have been a better fit at United rather than at Manchester City.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will take over that City in a few weeks after having agreed the deal several months ago. This may be his only third job in management, but Guardiola is already regarded as one of the best managers in the world. He arrives with an impressive reputation after having won the Champions League twice and several more league titles to his name. City are expected to be elevated to the next level under Guardiola.

Cantona, who has not made a major mark in managing clubs unlike several of his United teammates during the late 1990s, says that Guardiola would have been a better fit at United with his attacking philosophy rather than Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese, who is out of work after having left Chelsea six months ago, is the favourite to take over from Louis van Gaal when the Dutchman faces the sack. Van Gaal’s position was in doubt from the start of the season, but City were able to move ahead of the queue to sign Guardiola when they became aware that he was going to leave Bayern at the end of the 2015-16 season.

"I love his personality, I love the passion he has for the game, his humour. He is very intelligent, he demands 100 per cent of his players. And of course he wins things. But I don't think it's the type of football that the fans of Manchester United will love, even if they win. He can win with Manchester United. But do they expect that type of football, even if they win? I don't think so. Guardiola was the one to take. He is the spiritual son of Johan Cruyff,” said Cantona.
